Walther PPK

The Walther PPK is from the PP (Police Pistol) series of blow back operated semi-automatic pistols. First produced in 1929 the gun still remains very popular. Used for concealed carrying, VIP protection and still used by M15 and various police forces in both Europe and America.

The Walther PPK is of course most famous for being James Bond's favorite gun. Ian Fleming first introduced us to 007 with a Beretta 418 in Casino Royale (the book not the film). For the first five novels Bond's standard issue gun was the Beretta 418. Ian Fleming himself was issued a ACP Baby Browning when he was in Naval Intelligence in WWII. These smaller pistols are easy to conceal and good for covert operations but do lack the power of larger pistols.

Before From Russia with Love Flemming received a letter from a fan and gun expert who told Flemming he considered the Beretta a Ladies gun with no stopping power, and that Bond would not use such a weapon. He went on to suggest the Colt M1911 for its power but wanted Bond to carry a revolver, Flemming thanked the fan but felt Bond should have an automatic pistol. So the fan then suggested the Walther PPK as the best choice for a small Automatic sidearm for Bond after he tested several guns. In From Russia With Love 007's Beretta gets caught in his holster at the gypsy camp and almost costs him dearly. The next novel, Dr No (the first film) Bonds Beretta is taken from him by M and he is issued the Walther PPK, Bond still tries to steal the Beretta back however. And that is how Bond, James Bond cam about using the Walther PPK.
